Partial & Total Nail Avulsion Surgery

If you are suffering from a chronic ingrown toenail, Alissa or Pia may suggest what’s called a Partial or Total Nail Avulsion (PNA).

What is a Partial Nail Avulsion? A Partial Nail Avulsion involves a local anaesthetic and removal of the affected ingrown nail. We then put a solution where the ingrown nail was to prevent it from growing back.

The result; A  permanent solution to your painful, ingrown toenail.

We have performed hundreds of Partial Nail avulsion procedures and it’s rare to see a re-growth. In fact, statistics show the regrowth rate of our procedure is less than 3 in 100 patients. 

The local anaesthetic in the affected toe does cause some discomfort however this is minimal compared to the relief you will receive. Alissa, Pia and our staff will do everything we can to make to procedure as painless as we can. Generally, there is not too much discomfort after the procedure, only Panadol is requires.

The great thing is this procedure is a minor procedure and generally you can resume normal activities the very next day. However, resting the surgical site will allow for faster recovery and less post operative complications such as bleeding and infections. We do suggest take it easy for 2-3 day. 

We allow an hour appointment for partial nail avulsions. However the actual procedure in less than 10 minutes and is relatively quick. Being a minor surgical procedure our infection control procedures and post op instructions can take some time. 

Generally, recurrent ingrown toenails that don’t resolve by conservative  Podiatry treatment by warrant a Partial Nail avulsion. If your ingrown toenail just keeps coming back, it may be time to consider this minor procedure and get it fixed once and for all.
